Mark Twain Coin awaiting president's signature

It has taken time.

It has taken much effort.

It has taken patience.

Now all it needs is the signature of President Barack Obama.

When that happens, the commemorative Mark Twain Coin will be minted, and the money used for purchases will go Twain sites across the country, including the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum in Hannibal, the Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford, Conn., the Center for Mark Twain Studies at Elmira College in Elmira, N.Y., where Twain is buried, and the Mark Twain Papers & Project at the Bancroft Library of the University of California-Berkley.

"It's on the way to the president for his signature," Henry Sweets, curator of the Hannibal museum said. "Some questions were raised about the language (of the bill) and it had to go back. The changes had to be approved by both the House and the Senate, and that's what was done."

No tax dollars will be used to produce the coins, which are expected to be ready in 2016.?

In Defense of Courtship | Psych Central

In Defense of Courtship?A froggy went a-courtin? he did ride. . .?
~ From a 16th-century English folk song

Courtship. It?s such an old-fashioned word that some might find its use today to be quaint. Over the last few decades, courtship has gone the way of scented love letters and rotary telephones. In the push for more freedom of choice in relationships, courtship rituals have almost disappeared from American culture.

Yes, people still like romance ? as in candlelight dinners and walks on the beach ? but the structures and traditions that led from initial attraction to marriage have fallen by the wayside. Many couples move from attraction to renting a truck and moving in, no genuine commitment required. Going ?a-courtin?,? the slow wooing of another person and the gradual development of closeness and affection, seems to have all but disappeared.

The result of this hurried intimacy is a great deal of confusion. When sharing a bed and a life and maybe even a child comes before the sharing of long talks about values and goals and deep explorations of each other?s personality and history, couples often are set up for heartbreak. When things don?t turn out as expected, some couples are able to recognize their mistake, wish each other well and let the relationship go. But others, not at all sure what true commitment is about, fight with each other and with themselves to hang on. Cheating becomes the substitute for the dating and sorting out that should have occurred before moving in. Trust becomes yet another thing to fight about.

Everyone is a victim in this scenario, especially when the couple has had children. The kids end up without the stable home and loving family every child deserves. The women often end up single-mothering and struggling. The men often end up paying child support for children they may seldom see or becoming burdened with unanticipated responsibilities. Sometimes the couple manages to co-parent responsibly and well and remain friends. But even in these best-case instances, both now are looking for partners who may not want to deal with children or continued involvement with an ?ex.? Those without kids are not unscathed either. They have wasted years in a relationship that left them with trust issues and heartache.

All this can be avoided by bringing courtship back into style. I?m not talking about ?courtship? as defined by the Christian right, where couples remain chaste and parents are fully involved in every stage of the developing relationship (although that is certainly one way to go about it). I?m talking about a period of time during which a couple who is attracted to each other takes it slow and gets to know each other well before deciding they are exclusive, before planning to move in, and, by all means, before making a baby. Courtship isn?t dating.

Dating is step 1. Dating means going out with a number of people to see what kind of person is likely to be a fit. Dating is getting to know a number of people you are attracted to by going out for coffee or hanging together with friends or maybe going to a movie or a concert. Picking from a selection of one is unwise, no matter how interesting he or she may be. When the relationship hits a rough patch, as all relationships do, you?ll start wondering about what it would be like if only you had chosen someone more intelligent, more witty, or more competent on the dance floor. Dating a few people before making a choice gives you the chance to see just what kind of person fits your unique personality and your dreams.

Courtship is step 2. Courtship comes when you think you?ve found that special someone. It is the period between your initial choice and committing to making a life together. It?s a time for talks about everything and anything. Long walks and intimate dinners provide the time and the context for exciting, in-depth exploration of another person. It?s a time for learning about each other?s history, beliefs, values, and goals. It?s a time for deciding whether you think similarly about the use of time and money and your expectations about who will do what if you live together. It gives you a chance to experience how each responds to conflict and challenges as well as to easy cooperation.

Larger questions ? such as whether you want children, the role of in-laws in your life, and how decisions will be made ? get visited and revisited as the relationship gains depth and seriousness. Steady affection and care get added to the initial sexual excitement. Each learns how to cherish and nurture the other. When a couple is a good fit, they discover that they both love and like the person they are with and they like who they are when they are together.

Commitment is step 3. Relationships that last, that deepen and ripen into a long marriage and satisfying parenting, are built on a solid foundation. That foundation needs to be built over time and with care. If ?courtship? is too old-fashioned of a term, call it something else, but don?t skip over the process. When that process is done well, both members of a couple become secure in the knowledge that they are each going to give 100 percent to the relationship and to the family they plan to build together. Only then should there be talk of marriage and sharing a home, a life, and a baby.

Property Management Services for the Oita Oasis Tower Hotel ...

Abilitas Hospitality Co., Ltd., an asset and property management company for hotels and Japanese-style inns, today announced that it has been selected to provide property management services for the Oita Oasis Tower Hotel, located in downtown Oita.

The Oita Oasis Tower Hotel opened in September 1998 and operated under the ANA Hotel brand until the end of March 2012. The relationship with Abilitas Hospitality began in June 2010, initially covering consulting services primarily focused on the rebranding effort. The conclusion of a property management agreement allows Abilitas to provide broader-based support for the hotel?s operations. Under the terms of the agreement, Abilitas will work in-depth alongside with the hotel?s general manager and employees to enhance the products and services, as well as strengthening human resource development and working to enhance revenues.

The Oita Oasis Tower Hotel is part of a larger complex including the Oita Prefectural Culture Center and the NHK Oita Broadcasting Station, a widely recognized regional landmark. At 21 stories, with all 157 guest rooms on the 12th floor and higher, it is the tallest building in the prefecture and offers visitors the opportunity to fully enjoy the view. The location is also an ideal base for exploring tourist attractions including the hot spring resort towns of Beppu and Yufuin, or for business and social activities in the region. The hotel has five restaurants, 11 banquet rooms and wedding facilities, and since the rebranding has expanded its range of products and services catering to the local region.

Obama to appeal to public on fiscal cliff

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama plans to make a public case this week for his strategy for dealing with the looming fiscal cliff, traveling to the Philadelphia suburbs Friday as he pressures Republicans to allow tax increases on the wealthy while extending tax cuts for families earning $250,000 or less.

The White House said Tuesday that the president intends to hold a series of events to build support for his approach to avoid across-the-board tax increases and steep spending cuts in defense and domestic programs. Obama will meet with small business owners at the White House on Tuesday and with middle-class families on Wednesday.

The president's visit to a small business in Hatfield, Pa., that makes parts for a construction toy company will cap a week of public outreach as the White House and congressional leaders negotiate a way to avoid the tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to take effect Jan. 1. The trip will mark Obama's first public event outside the nation's capital since winning re-election.

Both sides warn the so-called "fiscal cliff" could harm the nation's economic recovery, but an agreement still appears far from assured. The White House and congressional Republicans have differed on whether to raise revenue through higher tax rates or by closing tax loopholes and deductions.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has pushed for raising additional revenue through the reducing of tax loopholes instead of raising tax rates on wealthy Americans. The White House has countered that the president will not sign legislation that extends current tax rates for the top 2 percent of income earners, or those households with incomes over $250,000.

Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey, a conservative Republican who opposes Obama's plan to increase taxes on the wealthy, said that while a presidential visit to his state "is always welcome," he remains staunchly against Obama's strategy for avoiding the fiscal cliff crunch.

"The president seems absolutely determined to inflict a tax increase on the American people," Toomey told CNN on Tuesday. He said Obama and congressional Democrats must come up with cuts in entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare.

Obama, only weeks after winning re-election, has signaled his intention to rally the public to pressure Congress to support his agenda, an approach that helped him win passage of a payroll tax cut extension and prevented interest rates on millions of federal student loans from doubling last summer.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said in an email to supporters after the election that the president's volunteer base was crucial to his re-election but said it was not aimed "just to win a campaign. We have more progress to make, and there's only one way to do it: together."

Following the election, Obama aides asked supporters to record YouTube videos discussing the need to have the wealthiest Americans pay more in taxes. Some of the people who shared their stories on YouTube planned to join Obama at the White House on Wednesday.

On Friday, Obama will tour and deliver remarks at The Rodon Group manufacturing facility in Hatfield, Pa., offering the company up as an example of a business that depends on middle-class consumers during the holiday season. The company manufactures parts for K'NEX Brands, a construction toy company whose products include Tinkertoy, K'NEX Building Sets and Angry Birds Building Sets.

Congressional Republicans, led by Boehner, have expressed openness to discussing additional revenue but oppose any plan that raises tax rates on the wealthy. They argue that the higher rates would also hurt some small businesses and hinder economic growth.

Republicans have called for changes to the tax code to eliminate tax breaks and loopholes that primarily benefit the wealthy. Several key Republican lawmakers have also said they would not be bound by a no-tax-increase pledge that they have adhered to in the past.

Boehner and GOP leaders planned to meet Wednesday with members of a bipartisan coalition of former members of Congress and business leaders that has advocated cuts in spending in major health care programs as well as changes in the tax code to raise more money but also to lower rates.

Can people record police officers? Illinois ban gets no help at Supreme Court.

Supreme Court justices refused to hear an appeal on behalf of Illinois' tough eavesdropping law. A federal appeals court had ruled that the law 'likely violates' free speech guarantees.

By Mark Guarino,?Staff writer / November 26, 2012

Attorney Anita Alvarez leaves a courtroom in May. The Supreme Court on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012 rejected an appeal by Alvarez to allow enforcement of a law aimed at stopping people from recording police officers on the job.

The US Supreme Court refused Monday to hear an appeal on behalf of an Illinois eavesdropping law that prohibits recording a law enforcement officer, leaving in place a federal appeals court ruling that barred enforcement of the law on the grounds it ?likely violates? free speech guarantees.

The eavesdropping law, which makes recording law enforcement officers a first-class felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison, is among the most severe in the nation regarding surreptitious audio or video recording of public or private conversations.

Illinois is one of just 10 states, plus the District of Columbia, where all parties must give their consent to a recording, according to data provided by The National Conference of State Legislatures.

The Supreme Court ruling is a major setback for Cook County State Attorney Anita Alvarez, who has waged a rigorous campaign against those who have violated the Illinois law.

Ms. Alavarez had appealed the May ruling by the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, which barred her office from prosecuting staffers of the Illinois chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union for monitoring police officers? public actions.

?The Illinois eavesdropping statute restricts far more speech than necessary to protect legitimate privacy interests,? the appellate court said in its ruling, ?it likely violates the First Amendment?s free speech and free press guarantees.?

That decision arrived just before the NATO summit in Chicago when thousands of protesters were expected to swarm the city?s downtown area, most armed with some kind of digital recording devices. The city said it would not enforce the law during that time.

Lead public attorneys in other Illinois counties have been hesitant to enforce the law as written, saying either that the punishment is too excessive or that it presents constitutional flaws.

Alvarez, however, has made headlines over the past two years for aggressively enforcing the law. The most high profile case is the 20-month jailing of Annabel Melongo for recording phone conversations with a county clerk before a judge released her in October 2011 amid public scrutiny of Cook County?s measures.

Another woman, Tiawanda Moore, was acquitted in August 2011 after being charged with recording Chicago police investigators who she felt were trying to dissuade her from filing a sexual harassment complaint against a fellow officer.

David Crane, a constitutional law expert at Syracuse University of Law in New York, says he is not surprised the high court rejected the provision involving law enforcement because the court typically ?errs on the side of constitutional rights and standard? unless the state or federal governments ?show compelling interests to supersede.?

Rapid advances in recording techniques ??such as the implementation of video and sound recorders on mobile phones ? has forced the court to re-examine eavesdropping laws every few years.

?The Supreme Court pays real close attention to the parameters [of free speech rights] and there?s always real tension when the law falls behind technology advances,? Mr. Crane says.

Emboldened by the high court action Monday, the ACLU in Illinois said it plans to pursue a permanent injunction against the law enforcement provision and want to expand its efforts to allow the public monitoring of public officials without threat of prosecution.

In a statement released late Monday, the Cook County State Attorney?s office said, ?we respect and accept the Court?s decision in this matter and we are continuing to review all legal options as the [ACLU] case proceeds in U.S. District Court.?

Harvey Grossman, legal director for the ACLU of Illinois, says, meanwhile, that ?while a final ruling in this case will only address the work ? to monitor police activity, we believe that it will have a ripple effect throughout the entire state.?

?We are hopeful that we are moving closer to a day when no one in Illinois will risk prosecution when they audio record public officials performing their duties,? he says. ?Empowering individuals and organizations in this fashion will ensure additional transparency and oversight of public officials across the state.?

New York City Eye: U.S. DOE tells PA officials: use same standards ...

From Kathy Mattheson at the Associated Press, reposted at the Lehigh Valley Express-Times, Pennsylvania:
Pa. told to re-evaluate charter school test scores
Nov. 22, 2012, 2:03 p.m. EST
AP

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Federal education officials have denied Pennsylvania's request to evaluate charter school achievement using more lenient criteria, saying they must be assessed by the same standard as traditional schools.

The rejection means Pennsylvania cannot substitute a less stringent method for measuring "adequate yearly progress," the federal benchmark known as AYP. Critics said the formula artificially inflated charter schools' performance for political reasons.

"I cannot approve this ... because it's not aligned with the statute and regulations," U.S. Assistant Education Secretary Deborah Delisle wrote in a letter released by the state Wednesday.

The issue surfaced in September when Pennsylvania's latest standardized test scores were reported. For the first time ? and without approval from federal officials ? state Education Secretary Ronald Tomalis treated charter schools as districts, not individual schools.

Schools must hit certain targets at every tested grade level to make AYP. But for a district to meet the benchmark, it needs only to hit targets in one of three grade spans: grades 3-5, 4-6 or 9-12.

Under Pennsylvania law, every charter school is considered its own district. So by using the grade span methodology, about 59 percent of charters made AYP ? a figure that supporters touted, comparing it with the 50 percent of traditional schools that hit the target.

Yet only 37 percent of charters would have made AYP under the individual school method. Delisle ordered Pennsylvania to re-evaluate charter schools' AYP status using that standard by the end of the fall semester.

She noted that Pennsylvania can assess charters under the district method but only in addition to the school method.

The state will now assess charters under both standards, according to a Wednesday statement from Pennsylvania Education Department spokesman Tim Eller.

Previously, Eller had argued that the grade span calculation leveled the playing field for charters, which are publicly funded but operate independently of school districts.

And while acknowledging that standard can mask academic problems, Eller has said school districts have taken advantage of the methodology for years. The grade span calculation enabled 61 percent of districts to make AYP in 2011-12, while only 22 percent would have made AYP without it, Eller said.

Opponents say parents are much more interested in the performance of individual schools than districts as a whole.

AYP is a key component of the federal No Child Left Behind law. Schools that fail to make AYP receive additional oversight and, eventually, could end up with new staffs or be shut down.

Follow Kathy Matheson at www.twitter.com/kmatheson.

Other reports have these added comments (Sara Satullo at the Lehigh Valley "Express-Times"):
The U.S. Department of Education refuses to sign off on Pennsylvania's unauthorized change to the way it calculates whether charter schools made state testing benchmarks.
and:
Critics of the switch Pennsylvania attempted say that it makes it easier for charter schools to make adequate yearly progress but proponents say as charter schools have grown it makes more sense to treat them like school districts.

For an individual school to make adequate yearly progress , the overall student body must score proficient or above on math and reading tests. And in schools with certain demographics of 40 or more students if one group misses one target the entire school doesn?t make adequate yearly progress. And until this year charter schools were measured the same way.

The federal Department of Education cannot approve Pennsylvania's request to treat brick-and-mortar and cyber charter schools only as "local education agencies" for adequate yearly progress purposes because "Adequate yearly progress determinations would be made for each charter school as an LEA but not as a school," according to a letter provided by the state.

"Moving forward, the department will calculate adequate yearly progress for each school building in every school district and charter school, as well as for each local education agency ? traditional public school district and charter school," Eller said.

The federal government is requiring Pennsylvania go back and calculate school-level adequate yearly progress results for charter schools for 2011-12 PSSA data by the end of the first semester of the 2012-13 school year. Any schools identified with problems must implement improvement plans by the start of the second semester of the 2012-13 school year.

Climate financing fund will be empty unless Doha talks find solution

OTTAWA - A new report shows that a $100-billion-a-year promise from rich nations ? including Canada ? to help poor countries deal with climate change is still unfunded as of the end of 2012.

And a second fund, meant to jump-start the process, will be out of money by Dec. 31, says a study by the international aid group Oxfam.

Canada has given $400 million a year for the last three years to the latter climate fund that was meant to be a down payment for poor countries to begin the work of cutting emissions and adapting to the inevitable effects of global warming.

But it only drew three years' worth of commitments from donor countries, for a total of $30 billion that will be drained by year's end.

The study shows that much of that money was recycled from other aid programs.

And the larger promise made by rich countries in Copenhagen in 2009 to raise $100 billion a year by 2020 remains in the wind, putting the onus for a solution on world leaders who are going to Doha for climate talks next week.

Boertala.com ? Online Build Own Business Network Your Online

Many online business owners and marketers use a variety of tools to make their business successful. Good strategies include maintaining a web site, publishing an ezine, joining affiliate programs, advertising on other people?s ezines, and much, much more. As any good Internet ?guru? will tell you, getting your name and product ?out there? is the most important part of your success. So, the general rule is: Use as many strategies as possible.

What I suggest is that you take this rule one step farther. What I think works best is combining as many of the strategies together, as possible. In other words, when you can, build your own network, using the tools you already have in place. And I?m using the word network, as it relates to networking your online systems ? not in the sense of a prospect or client network, though I have some tips on that, near the end of this article.

So, let?s break down this concept. Suppose you have a web site that promotes a product or service. You probably have a sales letter, some testimonials and a merchant account, so people can buy your product. Now, what I would suggest next, if you don?t already have it, is your own ezine (online magazine, operated by an e-mail autoresponder). You get visitors to subscribe to your ezine, using a pop-up or another type of FREE subscription form on your web site. Again, this may not be new to most people, but here?s another spin on it. In addition to your pop-up or basic sign-up form on your site, why not add a page to your site, with a link on your home page, that does nothing but promote your ezine.

You see, many people pass up your subscription form, because they are afraid of SPAM, or they don?t know enough about your ezine. Will it interest them? Or, will it just bombard them with more advertising?

A separate page can explain exactly what the ezine does, promote articles that you have in it, even give a sample issue, so prospects can see what they are getting. Be sure to have several subscription forms on this page between sections of your text, so people have plenty of opportunity to subscribe. Also, be sure that visitors are linked back to your home page, once they?ve subscribed, so they get back to looking at your product. Any good autoresponder will have this feature, which is crucial, because although you desperately want people signing up for your ezine, you also want them to read your sales letter and, hopefully, buy your product.

Make sure your ezine articles always link back to your web site, so you are constantly promoting yourself. After all, this is really what ezines are for.

Another part of good online networking is to set up affiliate programming, in a similar fashion to the aforementioned ezine promotion. That is, instead of just offering your own product as an affiliate program, set up a separate page on your web site for affiliate programs you use. So, you might have a link on your home/sales page called ?Other Great Products.? Obviously, you can use your own creativity for this title.

This link will take visitors to a site that promotes other products, for which you gain a commission as an affiliate. If you are unfamiliar with affiliate programs, visit ClickBank, the largest free affiliate program on the Internet. Most Internet marketers only offer their own product to people, who want to join affiliate programs, or they may offer just one other related product, with a link on their home page.

Plus, don?t forget any other web sites of your own. Always be sure to link to them on all of your URLs and in your ezine articles. The key to building your own online network is to be sure you have promotional pages for all of your products and affiliates on your web sites and to link everything together. Remember, you want every visitor on your e-mail list, and you always want them landing back on your promotional pages.

One final thought. Promoting your business network offline is also critical to your success. Some basic techniques I use are:

? URL on return address stickers

? Business cards with ezine address and web site

? Fliers at community businesses and public places (be sure your community knows you above all others)

? Free seminars in regional communities, discussing my topic (remember, you don?t need to make money here ? all you want is to get your name out there and to get e-mail addresses, so you can add them to your ezine list)

? Teach a class at a community college (get more e-mail addresses)

? Give free information away at community festivals, like Home Days

? Advertise in your local Money Saver magazines. It?s cheap, and it reaches tens of thousands of people, who love cheap or free stuff.

? Anything else you can think of that get people to your site and to your ezine

Stay positive. Building a network takes time and hard work, but it?s well worth it in the end.

Teach me how to make a book! ? Education in graphic design and ...

Digital technologies in education - In recent years there has been a great increase in the interest in how digital technologies in the field of education and academic research can be such a useful tool and also a crucial way of testing the educational practice itself. The development of these technologies has been pushed through with the contribution of many different disciplines. The tools that have already been developed, and the potential of all the new devices, could be of great value to add to educational activity in every field and also an opportunity to rethink the ways in which to produce and share knowledge. Of course it is still an ongoing process, but some goals have been achieved, concerning digital publishing for educational purposes.
Both the conferences that INC has organized in the past years, Unbound book 2011 and Boek uit de band 2012, have treated this issue in a very complete way (for example, the conference session called ?E-readers in Dutch Education? moderated by Joost Kircz) and the e-Learning research field is one of the most innovative and lively at this moment.
We are talking about digital tools and digital publishing for education and academic research.
What is the role of visual arts and design in these fields? And what about design and arts educational programs in the digital age?

Education for publishing - What I find curious is that we are actually living in the upcoming era of self publishing, in which it seems that the problem is only about giving the tools to enable the process and then things, like the making of a book or a magazine, can be easily done by anybody ? with all the debate generated about the increase in knowledge production due to instant on demand replication. This is, in my opinion, exactly the burning question:
What could be the meaning of a publishing class in the age of DIY practices?
Related to book design, what is the role of the teacher now that he/she has lost the complete authority and expertise on the subject, because digital publishing is a field that hasn?t been fixed in specific features yet?
Is it right to start seeing teachers and students in a different and more collaborative hierarchy?

The publishing process in the field of visual arts - If we get more into the world of visual arts and graphic design and the educational practice in these fields, of course we need to focus more on the medium ? we can call it book or whatever. There is no doubt that this particular approach could be one of the still missing points of view on digital publishing that can contribute to the proper development of it, even in its educational aspect. So we question about on what is a book and which shape it?s going to have in the near future, however, from the specific point of view of visual arts, we could also ask which is the right way to teach the entire publishing process, from the first idea to the final shape of the ?object?.

Publishing Class 2011 - poster for a workshop

Defining the publishing process - So, the first step would be: What do we mean by publishing process? First of all, I think the best way is to start with a wide approach, trying to set a framework about how to teach the whole publishing process in a way that includes all its phases, all its aspects and all the possible shapes that a publishing course can take ? for example, a journalism class or a book design class.
What are both the steps and the different areas in educational practice and what could be the main principles and guidelines for teaching in the publishing field?

Teaching journalism - An insightful point of view comes from the field of journalism? and some very functional ways of setting the problem came from a paper that I recently read, written by Raoul Boers ? lecturer in Content Management and Digital Culture at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, who? I am going to meet next week ? and other lecturers from different universities: [R. Boers, E. Ercan, L. Rinsdorf, R. W. Vaagan, From Convergence to Connectivism: Teaching Journalism 2.0, Online Journal of Communication and Media Technologies, Volume: 2 Issue: 4, October 2012].

The paper sets the key concept of media convergence and how it leads to fundamental changes in the education for the journalistic field under three sub-topics, ?the changes in the curricula, the changes in? course syllabi, and the changes in the technological infrastructures of the academic institutions?.
?Cross-media news writing and storytelling are different from producing for broadcast media and print news [?] In writing across media one adds elements to this process by creating a non-linear approach, which means that instead of developing a rigidly structured single narrative you choose to navigate through the elements of story by using a combination of text, still photographs, video clips, audio, graphics, and interactivity such as polls or blogs on a website in such a fashion that each medium is complementary.?

The paper goes on to explain how a journalism course can be structured, observing how some classes have been arranged around the concepts of media convergence, collaboration and user-generated content, identifying two main aspects of the process, which I find particularly effective: ?The integrative aspect (the merging of different technologies and industries to create new forms of cultural product and new modes of production and delivery e.g. iPhones, iPads, androids) and the divergence aspect (the flow of content across multiple media platforms, the cooperation between multiple media industries and the migratory behavior of media audiences, who will go anywhere for desired entertainment experience).?

How to frame a publishing class - There are several things to be previously defined in order to frame a publishing class:
A. The different profiles involved in the process;
B. The different activities and how they get integrated in the process (integrative aspect);
C. What the product is like and what the different platforms for it are (divergence aspect).
Finally, there are also kinds of product that are different on another level: beyond the media convergence aspect, there are indeed several different objects that have their own features and each one needs a different approach because it triggers a different process. There is a difference if I want to make a book for a novel, a news paper, a monthly magazine, an artist?s book etc. This doesn?t mean that they couldn?t be interacting with each other, but I think it is also important to set some specifics for each, to define better the market, the user, the medium and so on.
Another aspect to analyze, following these that I have explained above, is:
How to integrate technology in the process of teaching for publishing? Both in the phases of the process and for the different activities, profiles, platforms, products and objects etc.

Design class for publishing and publishing class for visual arts - There are many examples of studies about how digital technologies are embodied in the process of publishing in journalism and in the field of academic writing for several disciplines, and some education programs are completely conceived in this way.
But I?m afraid that the point for art and design is always the same: Why is this issue so complicated to frame and even not so taken into account in the field of the making of visual arts and the making of educational programs for visual arts? I see two main reasons: one is because the digital format and process has not been explored much sufficiently in book design and this is actually a consequence of the second reason: there is such a strong paper tradition in all the design and art parameters, rules, limits, and possibilities there are changing fast in technologies, but so slowly in the concepts. This makes sense also for the newspaper and the academic essay formats, but much more so for books because the design and art traditions have always been seen primarily as a their own visual product.
As we tried to identify the publishing process from an educational point of view following some examples in the journalistic field, we could ask the same questions and try to set the same steps and levels of arrangement for a book design course. But the specific challenge in this field should be indeed how to deal with the wall of such a strong paper and typographic tradition in graphic design and how to translate it into a digital environment.

Werkplaats Tipografie

The dialectic aspect of the teaching practice - What I also see as a decisive key concept, not to forget in an experimental phase such as it is, is that the dialogue between two different generations and roles (students/teachers) could be an interesting starting point for the research on how to make a book today, observing how this dialogue can actually affect the design process.
So the teachers could be seen as the ones that know how to do it properly in a more traditional way, and the students, the so-called digital-natives, could be the ones who have the right amount of ?ignorance? and openness to new technologies to break the rules of the book and see it in a new way, as it actually has always been in the past ? looking at, for example, the work of the pioneer of the New Wave movement in graphic design, Wolfgang Wiengart and his totally unconventional usage of the photographic film in typography, in the context of a strong tradition as the Swiss one was in the 50s and 60s. This is just one of the many examples of breaking the rules in graphic design, using a particular technology in a diverse way.
However, the dialectic aspect of the teaching practice is something that has always been there and it?s what makes education not only an activity to educate someone who is younger and less expert than us, but also a way to come up with new ideas, what makes a discipline itself evolve, starting from both positions, teacher?s and student?s. How to take advantage of this dialogue to re-define the book as such?

Wolfgang Weingart - experiments with letterings

The state of education in graphic design and visual arts - All these issues could help in having an idea of what the state of the art in the education for publishing is, both in the design and art practices and in the creating-content activities, but also to set some anchor points that could be useful to have a clear idea of all the steps achieved, in order not to be run over by the times changing so fast in terms of new media, new technologies and, in general, new behaviour.
As many designers and visual artists are also educators and they carry out a huge part of their research through the teaching practice, it?s interesting to talk with them about the educational aspect of their profession, because they can directly see what?s going on in the educational field from the point of view of someone who is actually making visual communication.
Many of them point out that they have the feeling that what we teach/learn in classes is to be a professional that could be just expired or be totally different in the next few years; this is true especially in the design field, looking at all the new and specific skills that a designer needs to have. Probably the world is not seeking the old-school-designer anymore, the designer has to become also a developer, or on the other hand, a manager, a critic, a curator etc. or maybe someone more like a director that makes all the parties interact in the proper way. But this is of course a very controversial issue: Are we moving towards a more specialized or a more generic kind of profession in the design field? Can the dialectic aspect of education in some ways contribute to solve this ambiguity and how?

Students and teachers in comparison - in order to study more closely these issues of book design, artist?s book and the educational aspects of both in the digital age, in the next interviews we?ll ask these questions directly to students and teachers.

? Session one will be two focus group interviews ? students and teachers together ? in two Dutch institutes, one is a school of graphic design and typography: Werkplaats Typografie, based in Ahrnem; and one is a course of publishing for visual art: Publishing Class 2012, the two year program designed for the Dutch Art Institute MFA ArtEZ by Casco - Office for Art, Design and Theory.

? Session two will be two single interviews in the field of journalism publishing, one to a student: Lars B?hm, developer of the magazine Uncovered; one to a teacher: Raul Boers, Amsterdam University of Applied Science.

Bedard: Is Packers-Giants the new Patriots-Colts?

Green Bay looking for a little revenge Sunday night after last year's playoff loss

By Greg Bedard

NBCSports.com contributor

updated 6:23 p.m. ET Nov. 24, 2012

Greg Bedard

Sunday Night Football is turning into rivalry football.

A week after the Ravens and Steelers battled each other in the AFC North, one of the burgeoning NFC rivalries, Giants-Packers, will have another installment at MetLife Stadium.

With two young, elite quarterbacks in Aaron Rodgers and Eli Manning leading each team, Giants-Packers is looking a lot like the successor to Colts-Patriots, Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning: two teams in different divisions who find a way to see each other often between the regular and postseason (sixth meeting since 2007 with Packers holding 3-2 edge).

Both Giants' wins against the Packers have come in January (2007 and ?11), in the postseason, as the Giants marched into Lambeau Field, left with a physical victory and went on to win the Super Bowl.

Last year?s 37-20 loss to the Giants ended a dream season for the Packers, who were 15-1 at the time. They lost because their execution was terrible ? giving up a Hail Mary touchdown, dropping four passes, turning the ball over four times and a plethora of missed tackles.

It?s safe to say the Packers (7-3) haven?t forgotten their performance, and the beating the Giants (6-4) put on them. Not that Green Bay will acknowledge that. It is focused on this game, not the past.

?Watching the playoff game, it wasn?t fun, I think that?s obvious,? coach Mike McCarthy said this week. ?But it?s part of our preparation for the week. A lot of the same players played in that game, played in the regular-season game (in 2011). We all understand how the season ended, but we?re focused on 8-3.?

A look at the keys for each team:

Packers
Rodgers can?t hold the ball:
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is an exceptional player with smarts, a terrific arm and very quick feet that allow him to keep plays alive or make them on his own. But sometimes Rodgers tries to do too much, tries to keep the play alive too long and that can lead to protection issues. Rodgers has been sacked 32 times this season, which is more than any other NFL quarterback. Some of those are on Rodgers for holding onto the ball too long. While the Giants rank just 13th with 25 sacks, they are capable of dominating a game with ends Jason Pierre-Paul, Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck. McCarthy needs to put in a quick-pass game plan, and Rodgers needs to stick to it outside of called shot plays.

Stop the run: The Giants have gotten a bit out of whack lately with their pass-run balance, but they?ll look to establish the run more against the Packers. The Giants need the run to make their passing game, which has struggled of late, really click. The Packers (11th in the league) have done a nice job against the run now that their personnel have settled down. The defensive line of Ryan Pickett, Jerel Worthy and B.J. Raji are very sturdy and have allowed inside linebackers A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones to fill nicely. The Packers want the Giants to stay pass heavy because they?re in a slump and could get some three-and-outs that could get the Packers going.

Do your job: When the Packers have struggled the past few years, it hasn?t been because of what the opponent has done, it?s because the Packers have killed themselves with poor execution. If the Packers execute their blocks, catch the ball and tackle well, they?re a tough matchup for anyone. But they haven?t done that consistently. This also includes kicker Mason Crosby, who has been in a terrible slump. He has to make his kicks early because if he?s an issue, it could change the way the Packers play in Giants' territory for the rest of the game.

Giants
Protect up front:
Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers will probably look to bring pressure against the Giants because his front seven has a tough time winning with standout outside linebacker Clay Matthews out. Capers also knows he can?t let Eli Manning have clean reads, and his line is ripe for the taking. The Giants have had a rough time of late protecting Manning ? they were destroyed by the Bengals. Expect the Packers to throw a ton of overload blitzes at the right side of the Giants? line, where guard Kevin Boothe and David Diehl have been the weak spots. The Giants chip a lot with the running backs out of the backfield, and they might have to think about keeping a tight end in to help with protection. The Packers will be coming.

Get after Rodgers: With excellent right tackle Bryan Bulaga out for the season, the Packers have had to do a line dance with left guard T.J. Lang moving to right tackle, and backup Evan Dietrich-Smith in at left guard. Both compete really hard but are limited in their ability at those spots. Left tackle Marshall Newhouse has had problems on occasion this season, and center Jeff Saturday is not the player he once was. The Giants? defensive line should be able to dominate this game up front against the run and the pass. And that should give the Giants a really good chance of winning the game.

Get physical with the Packers? receivers: The Packers have talented targets for Rodgers in Greg Jennings (questionable after abdominal surgery), Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Randall Cobb and tight end Jermichael Finley. But the book on them is that they don?t like contact and can be thrown off their game if defensive backs are physical with them. It also throws off the timing of the passing offense and causes Rodgers to hold the ball longer. The Giants should try to be physical with the Packers? receivers, but they should be careful with Cobb. The speedy slot receiver is lining up in different spots every week, including running back. He could be a big problem if the Giants don?t get their hands on him. That means everyone ? ends, outside linebackers and defensive backs ? needs to make sure they hit Cobb on his releases. If he runs free, he might go all the way to the end zone.

U.S. soldier accused of Iraq shooting "psychotic": doctor

TACOMA (Reuters) - A U.S. soldier accused of killing five fellow servicemen at a military combat stress center in Baghdad in 2009 was psychotic and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder during the shooting frenzy, a top U.S. forensic psychiatrist testified on Tuesday.

Sergeant John Russell, 48, is accused of going on a shooting spree at Camp Liberty, near the Baghdad airport, in an assault the military said at the time could have been triggered by combat stress.

Russell, of the 54th Engineer Battalion based in Bamberg, Germany, faces five charges of premeditated murder, one charge of aggravated assault and one charge of attempted murder in connection with the May 2009 shootings.

Six months ago, he was ordered to stand trial in a military court that has the power to sentence him to death, if he is convicted.

Russell's civilian attorney, James Culp, entered no plea at an arraignment on Monday at a military base in Washington state. Russell's court martial is tentatively set for mid-March and could last four to five weeks, attorneys told Reuters on Tuesday.

In a second day of hearings to discuss Russell's state of mind at the time of the shooting and establish what evidence or testimony to admit at the court martial, Robert Sadoff, a University of Pennsylvania forensic psychiatry expert, gave the opinion that Russell was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Russell has "dissociative disorder," or a lack of memory about the shootings, said Sadoff, who examined Russell for a total of 20 hours after the shootings. "He cannot remember. It's a legitimate disorder. He also has post-traumatic stress disorder."

Sadoff, a veteran of 10,000 criminal cases added: "It's a matter of what's going on in this man's mind. He was psychotic. He was not dealing with reality. That's what psychosis is."

If the defense can persuade a jury that Russell was not in control of his actions, it may be able to argue that he is not legally responsible and could spare him from the death penalty, if convicted.

During Tuesday's hearing, Culp sought authority from Judge Colonel David Conn to hire a forensic hypnotist to unlock Russell's buried memories and conduct a specialized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test to measure Russell's "mild diffused brain atrophy", which Culp argues played a part in his behavior.

This would help diagnose "the extent of brain damage as it relates to criminal responsibility," Culp said.

Army prosecutors urged the judge to decline. Major Dan Mazzone, one of four Army attorneys prosecuting the case, told the judge that an Army medical review already indicated that Russell's brain atrophy was typical of a man his age and further testing is an unnecessary expense to the Army.

"The bottom line, this is just not necessary. It's something the government should not be entitled to fund," Mazzone said.

The judge is set to rule on the matter over the next few days.

The proceedings, held at Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, Washington, come at a sensitive time for the Army, which is in the process of deciding how to prosecute Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, a soldier accused of killing Afghan villagers in cold blood earlier this year.

A two-week hearing at Lewis-McChord to establish if there is sufficient evidence to send Bales to a court martial wrapped up last week after harrowing testimony from Afghan adults and children wounded in the attack.

Bales' civilian defense lawyers have also suggested he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

On Monday, Russell's attorney outlined a defense based on his declining mental state.

Russell suffered from depression, thoughts of suicide, anxiety and stress from multiple deployments, and suffered "at least one traumatic experience involving civilian casualties" and "mass grave sites" while serving in Bosnia and Kosovo during 1998 and 1999, Culp said in presenting arguments to the judge after the arraignment.

Video games in symphony hall

How classical orchestras started experimenting with video-game music.

By Chris Gaylord,?Staff writer / November 21, 2012

An unexpected album topped the online music charts in November. For about a week, the London Philharmonic Orchestra pushed aside pop megastar Taylor Swift to seize the No. 1 slot on Amazon's most-downloaded list. What was this breakthrough hit? Not Brahms or Beethoven, but "The Greatest Video Game Music 2."

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The album covers more than two decades of video-game tunes ? from the 16-bit beeps of Sonic the Hedgehog to the viking horns of Skyrim.

Game and movie soundtracks have opened up classical music to a new, younger audience, says composer Andrew Skeet, who arranged the album. But translating this wide swath of music into something appropriate for the London Philharmonic presented a challenge.

Newer games, such as last year's Assassin's Creed: Revelations, already feature fully orchestrated soundtracks. Those songs were easy to record. However, Mr. Skeet had to rework the older selections, expanding the melody of synthesized "chiptunes" to take advantage of a choir, strings, and woodwinds.

After the release of its first video-game album ? which sold more than 100,000 copies ? the London Philharmonic performed the music live in concert. "A lot of people that went told me that they'd never been to an orchestral concert before," says Skeet. Many said they planned to attend more.

Orchestras around the world have experimented with performing video-game and film soundtracks. The website Movies in Concert has tracked more than 4,000 such concerts over the past three years. While most of these draw from cinema, concert series such as Video Games Live, Distant Worlds, and Nintendo's Legend of Zelda anniversary concerts have launched world tours.

And last year, the theme song for Civilization IV, "Baba Yetu," by Christopher Tin, won the Grammy for best instrumental arrangement accompanying vocalists ? making it the first video-game song to receive such an award.

Skeet says this recognition is not just good for video games, but also for classical music. He thinks the classical recording labels rely too much on reissued albums and old masterpieces.

"Classical music needs to find a new audience," he says, "not just become a museum."

What does the identity theft report really tell us? - Consumer Law ...

A recent post by Jeff Sovern discusses a Department of Justice Report indicating that identity theft is on the rise, and the amount of loss suffered as a result of identity theft is increasing. These are alarming statistics. But a few points should be mentioned before we begin to discuss how to reduce the incidence of this crime, or whether existing laws are working.

??????????? First, traditionally, identity theft has been distinguished from simple credit card fraud. Identity theft is a complex scheme whereby a thief steals personal information, adopts the identity of the victim and applies for credit in the name of the victim. Identity theft takes time, and requires the thief to actually assume the identity of the victim. Credit card fraud, on the other hand, is a simple crime whereby a thief makes a charge to an exiting account. The Department of Justice report mixes and matches these crimes through its use of the term ?Identity theft.? According to the report, ?Identity theft is defined as the unauthorized use or attempted misuse of an existing credit card or other existing account, the misuse of personal information to open a new account or for another fraudulent purpose, or a combination of these types of misuse.? Thus any unauthorized use of a credit card constitutes identity theft, and is included within the report, as is any ?attempted misuse,? which is often resolve with no inconvenience or financial loss.

??????????? According to the report, the incidence of true identity theft, the misuse of personal information, has been declining substantially, about 30% from 2005 to 2010. I assume this is due primarily to one simple act by creditors?whenever a major change, such as an address change, is made to an existing account notice is sent to the prior address to confirm the change.? This usually alerts the consumer to the beginning of an identity theft scam, which can be prevented before any problems arise. This act, coupled with consumer awareness of the importance of reviewing?one's credit report, should continue to reduce true identity theft.

??????????? The report also seems to indicate that loss allocation is not working to solve the problem of unauthorized credit card use. ?Notwithstanding the fact that maximum liability for the unauthorized use of a credit card is capped by federal law at $50, the mean loss reported is $1,260. To me, this indicates that either credit card issuers are completely ignoring the law, or, the? ?misuse? was actually authorized. (A third alternative is that the consumer was unaware of the law and simply paid the full amount.).

??????????? More surprising to me was the actual loss suffered as a result of true identity theft. My identity was stolen, and while the process of repairing my financial records was tedious, I did not lose any money. Once I was able to reach the right person, it was relatively easy to establish that I was not in fact the borrower. The Report, however, indicates that in 2010, the mean direct financial loss suffered by the misuse of personal information, (true identity theft) was $13,160. I can?t imagine how a loss of this much happens.

??????????? I don?t want to suggest that identity theft, in the broadest sense of the word, is not a serious problem that imposes a large cost on consumers and the marketplace. I do, however, suggest that we read the report carefully before we consider how to resolve the problem.
