Coming soon: lockers for shoppers at Walmart

SAN BRUNO, California -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc., facing growing competition for quick delivery of physical goods from online retailers like Amazon.com Inc, said on Tuesday it would start using its stores to get Internet orders to customers faster.

While Wal-Mart is the world's largest retailer by overall sales, on the Internet its revenue is a small fraction of Amazon's, adding some urgency to its e-commerce efforts.

Wal-Mart said it would soon test having lockers to hold goods ordered on the Internet in stores until shoppers pick them up. It is also doubling the number of stores that can fill orders placed online, an attempt to match the reach of Amazon's distribution network.

Those tests, along with services such as letting shoppers pay for online orders in stores with cash, are some of the ways Wal-Mart is trying to link its online business with its thousands of stores, executives told reporters at the company's first global e-commerce media day in San Bruno, Calif.

While Amazon had $61 billion in sales last year, Wal-Mart is on track to surpass $9 billion in annual online sales this year, said Neil Ashe, chief executive of its e-commerce unit.

Until recently, Wal-Mart had not broken out its online sales, but Ashe insisted the company would be able to build a competitive e-commerce business.

Starting this summer, it will put lockers in about a dozen U.S. stores to hold goods ordered online until shoppers pick them up.

Lockers are a growing trend in e-commerce. As more packages turn up on shoppers' doorsteps theft has increased, especially in urban areas, spurring demand for secure places nearby to store them.

Amazon, which has no stores, has installed lockers in grocery, convenience and drug stores for several years. Google Inc acquired a delivery locker start-up called BufferBox in November.

Wal-Mart is also planning a small expansion of a running test to ship online orders from physical stores. In 2013, the company plans to double the program to about 50 stores, a fraction of its nationwide footprint.

Using stores as fulfillment centers that are closer to customers lets Wal-Mart offer same-day delivery and next-day delivery of online orders "at very low cost," said Joel Anderson, chief executive of Walmart.com.

Two-thirds of the U.S. population live within five miles of a Wal-Mart store. That said, the company will likely expand this approach to hundreds of stores rather than thousands.

For example, in the Dallas area, Walmart has more than 100 stores. It would only need two or three of those stores to act as distribution centers to get the financial benefit of this approach, said Jeff McAllister, senior vice president of Walmart U.S. innovations.

The expansion is another part of Wal-Mart's efforts to compete with Amazon's successful Prime subscription service, which provides free two-day shipping in the United States for $79 a year. Another front in that battle is the expansion of what Wal-Mart's website sells.

Product assortment on Walmart.com grew 35 percent to 40 percent to two million items in 2012 and the company plans to double that this year, said Kelly Thompson, a Wal-Mart merchandising executive.

But Wal-Mart's digital efforts are not without growing pains.

The retailer asked reporters who were tweeting comments on Tuesday to use the hashtag #WMTinnovate. Along with tweets from the reporters, #WMTinnovate tweets were being sent from groups and individuals speaking out against the retailer.

The union-backed group Making Change at Walmart posted on Twitter: "@WalmartNewsroom Why don't you start by empowering the women in your stores with equal pay for equal work? #equality #wmtinnovate."

Action Fraud launch - Professional Security Magazine Online

Fraud5

March has seen West Yorkshire police and the remaining police forces of Yorkshire and the Humber join the rest of the UK?s police forces in launching Action Fraud as a central point of contact for reporting fraud and financially motivated internet crime.

Action Fraud is being launched nationally on April 1, 2013, but from since March 25, the public from across Yorkshire and the Humber will be encouraged to report fraud and internet scams directly to Action Fraud via www.actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.

The four forces have been working together to ensure that the new reporting system is adopted consistently across the region and, in doing so, remain committed to tackling fraud, scams and con-artists at a local and regional level.

Action Fraud, run by the National Fraud Authority, will be the main agency for people to contact if they are a victim of a scam or fraud offence both in terms of making reports and accessing support and prevention advice. Reports taken will be used to formulate a national picture as well as being passed on to forces for further investigation.

Speaking of the initiative, Detective Superintendent Steve Waite, Head of Intelligence for Regional Operations said: ?Action Fraud will enable a better sharing of information about the nature and extent of fraud across the region and beyond which will assist all law-enforcement partners in tackling the various different types of fraud affecting our local communities and businesses.

?Here in Yorkshire and the Humber the Economic Crime Units within the four forces have been working together as well as with the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau to ensure we?re ready to go live with Action Fraud on March 25.

?People will still be able to report fraud to their local force, who will take action if a possible fraudster is at their door for example. In non-urgent situations however, they will be encouraged to contact Action Fraud as the most appropriate agency.?

Detective Inspector Andy Howard of West Yorkshire Police said: ?Fraud is a serious offence that affected nearly 5,000 people in West Yorkshire in 2011/12 and West Yorkshire Police have been working closely with Action Fraud here to ensure that the public of West Yorkshire will continue to receive a quality service in relation to the reporting and investigation of fraud and internet crime.

?Having Action Fraud as the main point of contact for people to report this type of crime to ? and contact for updates ? provides the public with an agency who will deal solely with fraud, so we hope people see this as a positive measure and a sign of our commitment to treating fraud seriously.

?People should always contact the police in an emergency, such as if they have a possible fraudster at their door. However Action Fraud will be the lead agency on Fraud from now on. The agency will take people?s information and details of their crime and compile investigations, working with the police to bring offenders to justice.?

Requests for crime updates or advice about fraud should also be referred to Action Fraud via action.fraud@nfa.gsi.gov.uk or in writing to: The Information Manager, FREEPOST, Action Fraud, UK.

Spotify to Offer Video Streaming and Original Content | Geekosystem

Spotify has all but eliminated my need to ever buy music. For a few bucks a month I can queue up practically any song I can think of and rock out. Now they supposedly want to bring that same level of convenience to video. Reports say Spotify is going to launch a video streaming service like Netflix that will offer original content ? also like Netflix. That?s all well and good, but I already have Netflix.

Why is Spotify branching out into video? It turns out there?s not as much money to be made from paying huge fees to record labels and only charging your users a few dollars a month as originally anticipated. Spotify?s margins in their business model just aren?t big enough. Netflix itself had similar margin issues that it has tried to fix with its original content series House of Cards and the upcoming Arrested Development resurrection.

As more video streaming services surface like Hulu, Amazon, Redbox Instant, and sort-of Blockbuster, they?re all fighting over the same content. Offering original shows that attract customers can give them an edge, so if Spotify is going to jump into the middle of this knife fight they better come prepared.

There is no word on what kind of original content Spotify is planning, but if they?re going to have a chance it better be good. House of Cards was tremendous, and everyone is pretty excited for the return of Arrested Development. Hulu has a strong collection of original and exclusive content as well. I just started watching their original show Battleground, and it?s one of the best things I?ve seen in a while.

If Spotify is looking to get into video production to try to improve their margins, couldn?t they just do the same thing by branding themselves as a record label and produce original music? Whether or not I?ll be adding Spotify?s video service to my growing list of online video sources will most likely come down to whether their original content is any good.

If Star Wars Was Set in Jurassic Park

Mashing up two wonderful things into one ridiculously wonderful thing should be the constant goal of mankind. That's how we got smartphones. And gummy bears infused with alcohols. And designer drugs. One Minute Galactica imagined what would happen if we mashed up Star Wars and Jurassic Park and they came up with Jurat-at Park. I've watched both movies so many times that it's a no brainer that I would totally watch this movie. [Slacktory] More »

Lohan won't be charged for New York bar fight

By Alyssa Toomey, Baker Machado and Ken Baker, E! Online

Valerie Macon / Getty Images

Lindsay Lohan is off the hook for an alleged altercation with a woman in New York.

Lindsay Lohan may soon be headed to locked-down rehab, but she's legally off the hook for her New York City bar fight.

A source tells E! News the Manhattan D.A.'s office is dismissing its case against the embattled actress, and she will not face charges for her arrest stemming from her New York City nightclub brawl with Tiffany Mitchell back in November.?

Sources close to the investigation say the Manhattan D.A.'s Office will not prosecute LiLo because witnesses close to Mitchell failed to cooperate with the investigation. Specifically, they failed to speak with investigators.?

All the details on Lindsay's nightclub arrest?

In addition, sources say a surveillance video on the night of the fight was inconclusive. The video did not show Lindsay strike Mitchell, and the alleged victim tripped and fell when she was being escorted out of the club, so it is unclear as to what caused her injury.?

After Lohan's arrest, the psychic and apparent assault victim lawyered up with celebrity attorney Gloria Allred.?

Allred tells E! News, "Tiffany is very disappointed that the District Attorney has not decided to prosecute Lindsay."?

Lindsay Lohan (almost) returns to the scene of her 2011 necklace heist case?

She claims Tiffany had "two witnesses who spoke to the D.A. and corroborated what Tiffany alleged to have occurred."?

"The District Attorney has never told us that there was any issue about Tiffany's credibility," Allred said. "Nor did the District Attorney indicate that their office believed that what Tiffany reported was 'unfounded.'"?

Allred says her client is considering "all her legal options in the civil justice system because of what she suffered that night."?

LiLo has a new love interest?

"Tiffany has also been unfairly and inaccurately portrayed in the press," she told E! News. "She looks forward to responding in the future and to making sure that the full and accurate story of what happened that night is told."?

As for Lindsay's lawyer's response??

Her attorney Mark Heller tells E! News, "An alleged gypsy fortune teller tried to grasp her 15 minutes of fame by claiming that Lindsay Lohan assaulted her. Unfortunately, she was unable to see in her crystal ball that I would come to Lindsay's defense and present exculpatory evidence to the New York District Attorney's Office, which would facilitate and result in a determination by them to decline to prosecute Lindsay Lohan."?

Check out LiLo's latest mug shot!?

"This was the final legal hurdle to overcome and clear the path for Lindsay's freedom," he added. "Accordingly, no formal charges will be brought against Lindsay and her record will be cleared."?

Well, sort of.?

Check out the many mug shots of Lindsay Lohan?

(AP) ? Lindsay Lohan has a new mug shot.

The troubled 26-year-old actress turned herself in to police in California as a formality Tuesday, the day after she accepted a plea deal in her misdemeanor car crash case. A spokesman for the Santa Monica Police Department said she was booked then released.

Lohan was sentenced to spend five days in jail, but that time will be served in a locked-down rehabilitation facility. It's part of a plea deal that includes 90 days in rehab, 30 days of community labor, 18 months of psychological counseling, a fine and restitution.

Lohan pleaded no contest Monday to reckless driving and lying to police who were investigating the accident involving the actress in June along the Pacific Coast Highway. A charge of obstructing an officer was dropped.

Lohan also was found in violation of her probation in a 2011 necklace theft and sentenced to 180 days in jail. However, she can avoid that jail time if she complies with the conditions of her plea deal, which extends her probation for two years.

Superior Court Judge James R. Dabney set another hearing for May 2, when the court must be given proof of Lohan's enrollment in a treatment program.

After a pair of arrests for driving under the influence in 2007, Lohan has resolved her numerous legal issues without going to trial.

Conn. football players accused of sexual assault

TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) ? Two members of the Torrington High School football team have been charged with sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl, who has been taunted on social media sites in recent weeks by dozens of classmates upset at the allegations.

The Register Citizen reports (http://bit.ly/Yq7JnO ) the two 18-year-old football players, Edgar Gonzalez and Joan Toribio, have been charged with felony second-degree sexual assault and other crimes in an investigation that began last month. Both have pleaded not guilty.

Details of the allegations have been sealed from public view.

The newspaper reports social media posts by classmates taunting the victim have included vulgar language and have blamed her for "ruining" the players' lives.

The case mirrors one in Steubenville, Ohio, where two football players were convicted this week of raping a girl who was later threatened online.

AP: Costs of US wars linger for over 100 years

Chart shows the amount the US Government spends in payments to disabled veterans, wartime veterans and their survivors since 1970.

Chart shows the amount the US Government spends in payments to disabled veterans, wartime veterans and their survivors since 1970.

(AP) ? If history is any judge, the U.S. government will be paying for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars for the next century as service members and their families grapple with the sacrifices of combat.

An Associated Press analysis of federal payment records found that the government is still making monthly payments to relatives of Civil War veterans ? 148 years after the conflict ended.

At the 10 year anniversary of the start of the Iraq war, more than $40 billion a year are going to compensate veterans and survivors from the Spanish-American War from 1898, World War I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the two Iraq campaigns and the Afghanistan conflict. And those costs are rising rapidly.

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray said such expenses should remind the nation about war's long-lasting financial toll.

"When we decide to go to war, we have to consciously be also thinking about the cost," said Murray, D-Wash., adding that her WWII-veteran father's disability benefits helped feed their family.

Alan Simpson, a former Republican senator and veteran who co-chaired President Barack Obama's deficit committee in 2010, said government leaders working to limit the national debt should make sure that survivors of veterans need the money they are receiving.

"Without question, I would affluence-test all of those people," Simpson said.

With greater numbers of troops surviving combat injuries because of improvements in battlefield medicine and technology, the costs of disability payments are set to rise much higher.

The AP identified the disability and survivor benefits during an analysis of millions of federal payment records obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.

To gauge the post-war costs of each conflict, AP looked at four compensation programs that identify recipients by war: disabled veterans; survivors of those who died on active duty or from a service-related disability; low-income wartime vets over age 65 or disabled; and low-income survivors of wartime veterans or their disabled children.

?The Iraq wars and Afghanistan

So far, the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and the first Persian Gulf conflict in the early 1990s are costing about $12 billion a year to compensate those who have left military service or family members of those who have died.

Those post-service compensation costs have totaled more than $50 billion since 2003, not including expenses of medical care and other benefits provided to veterans, and are poised to grow for many years to come.

The new veterans are filing for disabilities at historic rates, with about 45 percent of those from Iraq and Afghanistan seeking compensation for injuries. Many are seeking compensation for a variety of ailments at once.

Experts see a variety of factors driving that surge, including a bad economy that's led more jobless veterans to seek the financial benefits they've earned, troops who survive wounds of war and more awareness about head trauma and mental health.

?Vietnam War

It's been 40 years since the U.S. ended its involvement in the Vietnam War, and yet payments for the conflict are still rising.

Now above $22 billion annually, Vietnam compensation costs are roughly twice the size of the FBI's annual budget. And while many disabled Vietnam vets have been compensated for post-traumatic stress disorder, hearing loss or general wounds, other ailments are positioning the war to have large costs even after veterans die.

Based on an uncertain link to the defoliant Agent Orange that was used in Vietnam, federal officials approved diabetes a decade ago as an ailment that qualifies for cash compensation ? and it is now the most compensated ailment for Vietnam vets.

The VA also recently included heart disease among the Vietnam medical issues that qualify, and the agency is seeing thousands of new claims for that issue. Simpson said he has a lot of concerns about the government agreeing to automatically compensate for those diseases.

"That has been terribly abused," Simpson said.

Since heart disease is common among older Americans and is the nation's leading cause of death, the future deaths of thousands of Vietnam veterans could be linked to their service and their benefits passed along to survivors.

A congressional analysis estimated the cost of fighting the war was $738 billion in 2011 dollars, and the post-war benefits for veterans and families have separately cost some $270 billion since 1970, according to AP calculations.

?World War I, World War II and the Korean War

World War I, which ended 94 years ago, continues to cost taxpayers about $20 million every year. World War II? $5 billion.

Compensation for WWII veterans and families didn't peak until 1991 ? 46 years after the war ended ? and annual costs since then have only declined by about 25 percent. Korean War costs appear to be leveling off at about $2.8 billion per year.

Of the 2,289 survivors drawing cash linked to WWI, about one-third are spouses and dozens of them are over 100 years in age.

Some of the other recipients are curious: Forty-seven of the spouses are under the age of 80, meaning they weren't born until years after the war ended. Many of those women were in their 20s and 30s when their aging spouses died in the 1960s and 1970s, and they've been drawing the monthly payments since.

?Civil War and Spanish-American War

There are 10 living recipients of benefits tied to the 1898 Spanish-American War at a total cost of about $50,000 per year. The Civil War payments are going to two children of veterans ? one in North Carolina and one in Tennessee? each for $876 per year.

Surviving spouses can qualify for lifetime benefits when troops from current wars have a service-linked death. Children under the age of 18 can also qualify, and those benefits are extended for a lifetime if the person is permanently incapable of self-support due to a disability before the age of 18.

Citing privacy, officials did not disclose the names of the two children getting the Civil War benefits.

Their ages suggest the one in Tennessee was born around 1920 and the North Carolina survivor was born around 1930. A veteran who was young during the Civil War would likely have been roughly 70 or 80 years old when the two people were born.

That's not unheard of. At age 86, Juanita Tudor Lowrey is the daughter of a Civil War veteran. Her father, Hugh Tudor, fought in the Union army. After his first wife died, Tudor was 73 when he remarried her 33-year-old mother in 1920. Lowrey was born in 1926.

Lowrey, who lives in Kearney, Mo., suspects the marriage might have been one of convenience, with her father looking for a housekeeper and her mother looking for some security. He died a couple years after she was born, and Lowrey received pension benefits until she was 18.

Now, Lowrey said, she usually gets skepticism from people after she tells them she's a daughter of a Civil War veteran.

"We're few and far between," Lowrey said.

Speeding Iowa dad ignores police with baby coming

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) ? An Iowa man who was pulled over for speeding as he rushed his pregnant wife to the hospital said he was determined to keep going despite the police lights flashing behind him.

Tyler Rathjen planned to keep going as his wife, Ashley, began giving birth to their son in the passenger seat. But a red light with heavy traffic finally forced him to stop.

"I should not stop, I'm not going to, I'm going to get to the hospital," Tyler Rathjen recalled thinking in an interview with Cedar Rapids TV station KCRG (http://bit.ly/ZOaOiD).

The baby's head and arms were already out by the time Iowa City Officer Kevin Wolfe reached the passenger door.

"We were all having a different experience," Wolfe said.

Ashley Rathjen gave birth to her third son, Owen, just blocks from Mercy Iowa City hospital on March 10.

"I kept saying: there's no break (in contractions) there's no break," she said. "He was coming at that time."

Wolfe helped with the final steps of delivery and then escorted the Williamsburg family to the hospital. His dashboard camera captured the episode.

Owen is now home with his parents and two brothers.

Ashley Rathjen said her newborn son will probably retell the story for years to come.

"I'm sure it will be a life story to tell everybody (about) how he made his grand entrance," she said.

Cyprus suggests small deposits be tax exempt: parliamentary official

Nicosia (Reuters) - The Cypriot government is suggesting that deposits up to 20,000 euros be exempt from a bank levy announced over the weekend that the island needs to avert a default, a parliamentary official said on Monday.

Remaining deposits up to 100,000 euros would be taxed at 6.7 percent and deposits exceeding that would be taxed at 9.9 percent, the official said on condition of anonymity.

The source said Cyprus's proposal would expect that bank depositors would be compensated with shares and government bonds related to future proceeds from gas earnings.

Under the terms of a deal brokered with euro zone finance ministers on Friday, Cypriot authorities were to impose a 6.7 percent tax on bank deposits under 100,000 euros and a levy of 9.9. percent on deposits exceeding 100,000 euros.

Business Outsourcing Contracts | CulturaPopulara.ro

When you think about business outsourcing it is important

to draw up a contractual agreement for you and the

outsourcing organization to sign.

This agreement will define the project in complete

including items such as the time line, budget, men and women,

and much more.

When you make a decision on a business for outsourcing it is

critical to draw up a contract. The contract will

spell out all of your expectations to the project and

what the function of the firm and their workers will

be.

This gives you the opportunity to hold the firm

accountable for the perform you are asking to be carried out.

When you sign a contractual agreement for company

outsourcing the contract will specify the time frame

of the project and set a timeline.

The timeline will set milestones for the duration of the project

and specify every single with an expected completion date. In

addition, a lot of contractual agreements will specify

percentages of payment according to the completion of

every set milestone.

If the completion or the milestone is not met on the

expected date, a stipulation could be defined on the

contractual agreement also.

The contract signed among you and a organization

outsourcing firm will define the budget of the

project and what the firm has agreed to do the

project for.

If the company has underbid the project, then they

should spend the excess funds to total the project. It

is not your responsibility if the company underbids

and the contract really should be clear on this.

This contains the amount of hours it requires for

completion of the project. If the company promised the

project would be completed in a certain quantity of

hours and it is not then their staff will be operating

for free till the project is completed.

You have to sign a contractual agreement along with the

company outsourcing business you are hiring. This is

to guard the business and the funds you have for the

project.

Dow snaps 10-day rally, still ends up for 4th week

Stocks finished in negative territory Friday, with the Dow snapping a 10-day win streak and the S&P 500 ending shy of its record closing level, following a disappointing consumer sentiment report and as investors started to question whether the recent rally has run out of steam.

(Read More: No 'Irrational Exuberance' in Stocks Now: Greenspan)

"We're near the all-time high and you'd have to start betting on a mean reversion," said Brian Battle, vice president of trading at Performance Trust Capital Partners.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished lower for the first Friday in 2013, weighed by JPMorgan, while Bank of America jumped nearly 4 percent to lead the gainers. Still, the blue-chip index logged its fourth-straight week of gains and is up an impressive 11 percent so far this year.

(Read More: Will the Ides of March Kill the Rally?)

The S&P 500 ended almost 5 points from its 2007 closing high and the Nasdaq also ended lower. Still, both indexes posted their third-consecutive week of gains.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, ended above 11.

Major averages took another leg lower after a report that showed consumer sentiment dropped 71.8 in early March, tumbling to its lowest since December 2011, according to the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's preliminary reading. Economists expected a reading of 78.

Earlier, traders reacted little to a morning economic report showing inflation, though pushed higher by surging gas prices, remained within parameters allowing the Federal Reserve to continue its ultra-easy monetary policy.

The pace of manufacturing in the New York state slipped to 9.24 in March from 10.04 in February, according to the New York Federal Reserve. Economists expected a reading of 10.

(Read More: Stocks Could Hit New High With US Data on a Roll)

Meanwhile, industrial production grew 0.7 percent in February, according to the Federal Reserve, topping estimates for a gain of 0.4 percent. Manufacturing output rose 0.8 percent during the month, snapping back from a decline in January.

Among financials, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan declined after both banks received conditional approval for their capital payout from the Federal Reserve.

Meanwhile, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America were among names whose capital plans were approved. but BB&T and Ally Financial did not pass.

Groupon rallied after widely-followed investor Bill Miller said he likes the stock. Miller said he also likes Apple, Texas Instruments, and US Airways.

Investors in Europe booked gains after a 10-day global rally. U.S. shares closed at record levels on Thursday, but markets were disappointed by President Barack Obama who seemed no closer to striking a deal on deficit reduction after a long session in Capitol Hill.

This week's final trading day will also feature the quarterly "quadruple witching" options and futures expirations. Quadruple witching is associated with market volatility as investors seek to rebalance their portfolios. (CNBC Explains: Witching Hour)

Information technology: Improving the health of machines

Mar. 13, 2013 ? A novel adaptive management system boosts the efficiency of wireless sensor networks that monitor surrounding environments.

Electronic engineers in Singapore have developed and successfully tested a management system that increases the efficiency of wireless sensor networks for monitoring machine health. The new system, known as an adaptive classification system (ACS), reduces the power consumption of individual sensors and increases their lifespan, while also decreasing network traffic and data storage requirements.

The ACS also achieves more robust results in terms of diagnosis of machine problems and prognosis of performance. "Other applications include monitoring patient health, disaster monitoring systems, such as fire alarms, and environmental monitoring for chemical plant accidents, air and water quality," says Minh Nhut Nguyen of the A*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research, who led the research team.

Wireless sensors are now so inexpensive and flexible that their application in monitoring systems is widespread. Because of the environments in which they are deployed, sensors increasingly require their own portable power source, typically a battery, which means they have a limited lifespan. Any way of reducing the amount of power the sensors draw would increase their lifespan, decrease the need to replace them and therefore reduce costs, Nguyen explains.

Reducing sensor sampling rates to a practical minimum is one way to lower power consumption; this can be achieved by halting monitoring when a machine is not operating. Typically, a machine functioning smoothly demands a lower and coarser sampling rate than one that needs attention. Nguyen and his co- workers therefore developed their ACS along these lines.

Importantly, it incorporates an adaptive system of nested sensors. Some of the ACS sensors sample particular parameters at a low rate to provide data for a model whose purpose is simply to trigger more intensive sampling of other sensors when a potential problem is detected.

In addition, the system utilizes a set of models that is geared to sensors sampling at a particular rate. The ACS also integrates several different methods of classifying whether particular data patterns are of concern such that they require higher levels of sampling. Decisions are therefore made on the basis of multiple classifications. This not only increases the robustness of the system, but also means that it can be trained to detect problems using a minimal amount of data.

Nguyen and his team tested the ACS using a machinery fault simulator, a machine in which key components, such as bearings, could be replaced by faulty or worn ones. Encouragingly, on average the ACS outperformed current models in these tests.

Why Irish people feel they have no alternative but to celebrate St Patrick's Day

Mar. 12, 2013 ? Irish people will feel compelled to drink alcohol to celebrate St Patrick's Day this Sunday -- whether they want to or not -- according to a Northumbria University academic.

Alcohol consumption is romanticised in Irish culture and many Irish people regard drinking on St Patrick's Day as a symbol of patriotism to their country, the research reveals.

Marketing lecturer Matthew Kearney asked 70 Irish people in their 20s and 30s to keep shopping diaries and analyse their feelings about their spending as part of his PhD into the experiences of and attitudes to shopping with a particular focus on excessive shopping habits. He then conducted in-depth interviews with a third of those who took part.

The research revealed that every single person who took part in the research celebrated St Patrick's Day and many maxed out their credit cards and borrowed from friends and family to support the celebrations.

Even those who declared themselves as teetotal the rest of the year felt compelled to drink alcohol to celebrate St Patrick's -- a day when it is estimated that more than 13,000,000 pints of Guinness will be consumed around the world.

Matthew, from Coleraine in Northern Ireland, said: "Alcohol consumption, when placed in the context of Ireland becomes instantly romanticised, attributed to one's underlying Celtic soul. Ireland is synonymous with alcohol; although Ireland boasts world heritage sites, titanic museums and the birth and death sites of numerous authors and poets, its most popular tourist attraction is the Guinness Storehouse.

"When Barack Obama and Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip make a point of publicly enjoying a Guinness experience while visiting Ireland, it starts to become even more apparent that alcohol consumption is so completely intertwined with 'Irishness.'"

The research highlighted the perceived cultural importance of celebrating St Patrick's Day. While everyone who took part in the research 'did something for St Patrick's Day,' not all those with a partner celebrated Valentine's Day, for example.

The fact that the research sample was split almost equally between men and women shows that St Patrick's Day celebrations are far more than a symptom of 'lad culture.' Participants who had no intention of celebrating eventually gave in to the mockery and cajoling of their Irish friends and spent considerable amounts of money on the day with one woman recalling spending ?350 on celebrating.

Other participants recalled spending the day away from Ireland but being pressured to join in the celebrations by their English counterparts.

Matthew added: "Many of the people who took part in the research seemed to feel an inescapable pressure to drink as though it is part of Irish consumers' culture and heritage. When this is combined with the expectations of others, created by the concerted efforts of marketers, the result appears to be inevitable.

"However, many of those I interviewed expressed extreme regret in the aftermath of the day while others demonstrated a learned helplessness towards stopping drinking on the day. There seems to be a perception that it's their duty," he added.

A guidance cue that helps kidneys form may also be a red flag that they are in danger, researchers report

AUGUSTA, Ga. A guidance cue that helps kidneys form may also be a red flag that they are in danger, researchers report.

Acute kidney injury, a common and serious complication of hospitalization, is on the increase worldwide, affecting an estimated 6 percent of all hospitalized patients and 30-40 percent of adults and children having cardiopulmonary bypass surgery.

About 10-15 percent of acute injuries translate to chronic kidney damage or failure that may require dialysis or a kidney transplant, said Dr. Ganesan Ramesh, kidney pathologist in the Vascular Biology Center at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University.

Now, animal and human studies have shown that within a few hours of injury, a significant amount of the protein semaphorin 3A is detectable in the urine, Ramesh and his colleagues report in the journal PLOS ONE.

"Semaphorin 3A appears to be a sensitive biomarker that we believe will give physicians an early and accurate heads-up that their patient's kidneys have been injured so that damage can be minimized and potentially reversed with rapid intervention," said Ramesh, the study's corresponding author.

The protein, which is not usually measurable in urine, was quickly detected in a group of 60 pediatric patients following cardiopulmonary bypass surgery at Cincinnati's Children's Hospital. High levels of the protein were about 90 percent accurate at identifying the 26 children with acute kidney injury. In those patients, urine levels were high within two hours, peaked at six hours and essentially normalized 12 hours after surgery.

Probably because of the kidney's significant reserve capacity, it's more like 48 hours before the current biomarker creatinine, a byproduct of muscle metabolism typically excreted by the kidneys, is elevated in the blood. By then, it's often too late for strategies such as massive fluid volumes, antibiotics and other interventions to yield significant improvement, he said

In the study group, creatinine levels were essentially the same in all 60 children for 24 hours. By 48 hours, levels were significantly elevated in the acute kidney injury group and stayed up for five days.

The researchers initially identified semaphorin 3A in an animal model of temporarily compromised oxygen levels, or ischemia, to the kidneys. When they eliminated the protein's expression in a mouse, it reduced ischemia-related kidney damage.

The hard-working, high-energy kidneys are particularly vulnerable to any decreases in the usual oxygen levels that may result from life-saving strategies such as cardiopulmonary bypass and mechanical ventilation, Ramesh said. Over the course of the day, the kidneys filter the body's total blood volume several times, resorbing needed components like nutrients and eliminating toxins, excess sodium and more. When they stop filtering properly, the body starts dumping both good and bad products into the urine.

Children with congenital heart defects who need multiple surgeries to repair their hearts may be at particular risk for acute kidney injury. In the study, children who developed the injury spent the longest time on bypass and in the hospital.

Many unknowns persist about semaphorin 3A including the role of the guidance cue in the healthy developed kidney and why it's levels shoot up then drop down so dramatically with injury. He notes that there is fairly significant cell turnover in the kidneys so it may have a role in regeneration. Ramesh has already worked with Japanese physicians to look at the levels in 350 older patients in intensive care for a variety of maladies. He's also working on an antibody that will screen specifically for semaphorin 3A.
