In a surprise move, the Golden Globe award for Best Drama went to "Argo," the true story of how the CIA faked a sci-fi movie as a cover to rescue hostages in Iran. Ben Affleck also won the award for Best Director, which is notable because he was overlooked for an Academy Award nomination earlier this week.

"Argo" taking the top award was an upset to Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" -- which took home the Best Actor in a Drama award for Daniel Day-Lewis -- and "Zero Dark Thirty" -- which won Best Actress for Jessica Chastain. The other nominees for Best Drama did win other awards as well. "Django Unchained" nabbed the Best Screenplay award for Quentin Tarantino along with Best Supporting Actor for Christoph Waltz, and "Life of Pi" won Best Original Score.

Even with the win, "Argo" is still a longshot for the Best Picture Oscar, considering how Affleck was snubbed for a Best Director nod. The last movie to win the top prize without a the director being nominated was "Driving Miss Daisy" in 1990. The directors of the Best Picture nominees "Zero Dark Thirty" (Kathryn Bigelow), "Django Unchained" (Quentin Tarantino) and "Les Miserables" (Tom Hooper) were also left off the Best Director list.

In the Comedy/Musical categories, "Les Miserables" dominated, winning Best Picture, Best Actor for Hugh Jackman, and Best Supporting Actress for Anne Hathaway. Jennifer Lawrence was named Best Actress in a Comedy for "Silver Linings Playbook."
