Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is trying to regain his composure after the campaign distractions threaten to undermine his message during the confidence-building phase of the race. There are only seven weeks before the nation goes out to vote for its next president and two weeks before he faces President Barack Obama for the first of three debates.
Yesterday, Romney tried to contain the political damage after the release of secretly videotaped remarks to donors in which he dismissed 47 percent of Americans a dependent on the government. The Obama campaign and the Democrats were outraged while some Republicans distanced themselves from the remarks.
Republican Party strategists said that the remarks could alienate voters, who Romney needs to win the November election. These include the non-college educated whites, senior citizens, veterans, and Latinos.
Romney is running out of time to present himself as a credible alternative to President Obama. There have been several distractions in the past weeks and the Republican candidate is having a hard time to get his message out.
Obama?s campaign took advantage of Romney?s troubles. During an interview on CBS? Late Show with David Letterman, the president said that people don?t think they are victims. He added that there is nothing wrong with helping Americans. He said that Americans don?t want a president who is dismissing a large part of the country.
The recent flap came at a critical time for Romney, who has to answer about the infightings within his campaign. He was also criticized for his comments after the death of the US ambassador in Libya. According to the latest polls, Romney is trailing President Obama nationally and in swing states.
Romney said that he didn?t mean to write off any group of voters. He wanted to place his statement in the broader context of his campaign message. He said that he believes in free people and free enterprise and not in redistribution.
